A cable (electric cable) is a factory-fabricated assembly of one or more metallic conductors, each provided with appropriate insulation and laid up together with fillers, bedding, shields, armouring and outer sheaths as required, forming a flexible or semi-flexible line for the transmission and distribution of electrical power, control signals or low-voltage communication within buildings, industrial installations, vehicles and infrastructure. In engineering practice the term typically refers to copper- or aluminium-conductor products supplied on reels or in fixed lengths, designed and tested to defined voltage classes, current-carrying capacity, flame-retardance and environmental resistance according to relevant cable standards.
