Irradiation of human blood is used to avoid the TA-GVHD (transfusion-associated graft-versus-host-disease), a rare but devastating adverse effect of leukocytes present in blood component for immunocompetent transfusion recipients. It is worth noting that cesium and X-ray irradiators are devices dedicated to blood irradiation, usually operated by specialized institutions or departments external to the healthcare facilities that are actually using the irradiated blood (and thus have to purchase it from the irradiation service providers); in contrast, many user facilities already have LINACs and cobalt sources for cancer therapy and other treatments.
