Aluminium Alloy Wheel is a type of metallic wheel rim primarily made of aluminum (comprising approximately 85%–95% of the total composition), with added alloying elements such as silicon, magnesium, copper, zinc, and manganese to enhance strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability. These wheels are widely used in passenger vehicles, racing cars, and high-performance models. Compared to traditional steel wheels, aluminium alloy wheels offer significant advantages, including reduced weight, better heat dissipation, superior corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal. These features contribute to lower vehicle weight, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced braking performance. Key manufacturing processes include gravity casting, low-pressure casting, forging, and flow forming (rotary forging). Forged and flow-formed wheels are known for their superior mechanical properties and are commonly used in motorsports and premium vehicles. Depending on the alloy composition and manufacturing method, common materials include A356, 6061, and 7075 series aluminum alloys, which are often subjected to T5 or T6 heat treatment for improved performance. The development of aluminium alloy wheels dates back to the early 20th century, initially used in racing and luxury vehicles. As technology advanced and production costs declined, they gained mainstream adoption in passenger cars from the 1990s onwards. Modern aluminium wheel manufacturing is a highly automated and precision-controlled industrial process that integrates metallurgy, fluid dynamics, and advanced surface finishing technologies such as electrophoresis, powder coating, polishing, and anodizing. Rigorous quality control measures—such as fatigue testing, X-ray inspection, dynamic balancing, and structural integrity analysis—are essential to ensure safety and performance. Amid global trends toward carbon neutrality and lightweight automotive design, aluminium alloy wheels have become a key enabler of vehicle light-weighting strategies, while also driving the development of high-performance recyclable aluminum materials.
