Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC), also referred to as a biosafety cabinet, is a ventilated primary containment device used in laboratories to enable the safe handling of infectious or potentially infectious biological materials by controlling airflow and filtering air through HEPA filtration systems. It is an engineering control designed to reduce exposure to biohazardous aerosols, droplets, and splashes generated during manipulations such as open culture handling, aliquoting, and centrifuge loading or unloading, while also helping maintain the cleanliness of the work zone when the cabinet type is intended to provide product protection. In practical terms, BSC performance is defined by directional airflow, HEPA-filtered supply and exhaust air, and the level of protection provided to the operator, the laboratory environment, and the material being handled, which varies by cabinet class and type. Under the standard class framework, Class I cabinets provide personnel and environmental protection but not product protection, Class II cabinets (including A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 types) provide personnel, environmental, and product protection, and Class III cabinets are gas-tight maximum-containment systems used for the highest-risk work.
