Polypropylene terpolymer is a propylene based polyolefin in which propylene is polymerized together with two distinct comonomers, most commonly ethylene and a higher alpha olefin such as 1 butene, to deliberately disrupt isotactic propylene crystallization and tune the balance between stiffness, clarity, sealability, and low temperature toughness. Industrially it is produced as pellet resin in bulk or gas phase PP units using stereospecific catalysts, typically Ziegler Natta and increasingly single site systems, with comonomer feed and reactor design controlling comonomer content, sequence distribution, and molecular weight distribution so the material behaves as a single phase, seal friendly PP rather than a two phase impact system. Relative to PP homopolymer and conventional random copolymers, PP terpolymers are engineered for lower melting point and lower seal initiation temperature, improved optical properties and softer hand, with adequate hot tack and puncture resistance for film converting, at the cost of reduced modulus and upper service temperature as crystallinity is reduced.

In the value chain, polypropylene terpolymer is a base resin supplied by PP producers to film and sheet converters, often offered as “base” grades or as additive packaged grades where slip and antiblock systems are pre incorporated to stabilize processing and surface behavior in extrusion and orientation. The dominant end uses are BOPP and CPP structures where a terpolymer layer functions as a heat seal layer, lamination web, or overwrap film, as well as selected shrink label film grades where controlled shrink behavior and sealability are required.
